PRESS RELEASE
Over 500 Sydney siders volunteer to bring loads of Christmas cheer.
On Saturday 17 December, over 500 volunteers from around Sydney will come together in a warehouse in Mascot for the annual Sydney Basket Brigade Packing Day. These volunteers will pack 5,000 Christmas hampers for people in need.
Packing Day Event Co-ordinator & Basket Brigade committee member Kevin McGrath says, “Christmas can be the loneliest time for many. This is a chance for Sydneysiders to spread some Christmas cheer.”
The Sydney Basket Brigade is a Magic Moments Foundation program run completely by volunteers. Basket Brigade is a nationwide campaign with eleven Basket Brigades operating in Australia. Its aim is to bring some Christmas spirit in the form o of a hamper to the elderly, homeless and less fortunate to let them know that they are loved and someone is thinking of them. Hampers are given anonymously and delivered personally by volunteers. The receivers are simply told the hampers are “from someone who cares”.
Kevin McGrath explains “We wouldn’t exist without the donation of individuals and companies time, money, food and gifts. Even the warehouse is donated. The generosity of people is beyond words.”
Angela Fong volunteered at last year’s Packing Day and was so inspired by the da ay she joined the Basket Brigade committee this year. “It was amazing to see so many people give up a beautiful sunny Saturday to pack hampers, when they could have been at the beach or visiting friends.” “There was such a fantastic vibe. Everyone was there for the same reason and giving up one day in our lives, means the world to others.”
If you are free this Saturday to donate a few hours, half a day or a full day, join us the Basket Brigade by registering at this site.
